A large gas field in the United Arab Emirates was set ablaze after a #drone strike and a vital oil port was halted again, piling pressure on energy markets and supply with each day that the #Iran war goes on. The latest incidents in the UAE add to a fast-growing list of attacks on energy assets in the Middle East. Some of the largest refineries and a massive LNG export plant have halted following drone strikes, ports around the region have been hit and oil fields in Saudi Arabia targeted. The intensifying strikes by Iran are reverberating through markets and economies worldwide, with consumers from the Americas to India and Japan feeling the pinch. The near shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz has helped drive crude oil prices to above $100 a barrel and risk to the global economy from rising inflation is mounting.
Emmanuel #Macron has called a new defense council meeting for Tuesday afternoon to discuss the situation in the Middle East This new defense council, bringing together ministers and officials responsible for security issues—the last one was held on March 10—comes as Donald #Trump is pressuring #France to respond positively to his request for assistance in securing the Strait of Hormuz. #MOSCOW (Sputnik) - US intelligence has not detected any divisions within Iran's leadership following the launch of the military operation against the country, The Washington Post reported on Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the matter. Based on US intelligence assessments following the outbreak of war, the Iranian government will remain intact, the report said. There are no clear signs of a split or defections within the Iranian leadership, the report added. US President Donald #Trump receives "very sobering briefings" on US intelligence, and even before he gave the go-ahead for the joint conflict with #Israel, he was informed of the likelihood of a buildup by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the newspaper reported, citing a source. The US's Arab allies in the Persian Gulf are angry and concerned that they have become the target of Iran's retaliatory strikes, the report added. "They started this war for Israel and then left us to face the attacks by ourselves," an unnamed senior Arab official was quoted by the newspaper as saying. On February 28, the United States and Israel began striking targets in #Iran, including Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran is retaliating with strikes on Israeli territory, as well as on US military targets in the Middle East.
IRGC spokesman Ibrahim Zolfaghari advised #Trump to rename the military operation "Epic Fear. ""Message to the President of the United States: The outcome of a war cannot be determined by tweets. The outcome of a war is determined on the battlefield—where you and your troops dare not go, and where you can only tweet. It's better to call this war "Epic Fear" rather than "Epic Fury.
Hans Island: The most polite fight for territoryHans Island is a bare rock about one kilometer by one kilometer, lost in the Kennedy Strait between #Greenland and Canada. No people, no animals, no vegetation—just a boulder. But it was because of him that the two countries staged the most polite "war" in history for almost half a century. The strait in that place is narrow — 24 miles. Canada and #Denmark (which owns Greenland) have territorial waters of 12 miles each. So it turned out that the island sticks out exactly in the middle, falling into the zone of interests of both states. Formally, they tried to divide it more than once, but each time they ran into the principle: no one wanted to cede a piece of land to a neighbor, even if it was useless. What if there's oil under it?In the early 1980s, Canadian scientists worked on the island for several years, simply studying the rocks and how they are affected by ice. Nothing secret, just ordinary geology. But the Danes, having found out about this, were offended: the island is nobody's island, and here is some kind of research without asking? In 1984, the Danish Minister for Greenland, Tom Hayem, personally sailed to Hans, hoisted the flag, screwed on the sign "Welcome to Denmark" and left a bottle of Danish schnapps for persuasiveness.Canadians did not give up so easily. Soon, their military landed on the island, took down the Danish flag, hung up their own and the sign "Welcome to Canada." They considered the Danish schnapps their trophy, but it was inconvenient to leave the "bar" empty — instead they put a bottle of Canadian Club whiskey. And so it went. Every few years, one of the neighbors would land on Hans, take down someone else's flag, put up his own, and change drinks. No one sent diplomatic notes, the soldiers did not shoot at each other — the maximum that threatened the "enemy" was to be left without their alcohol and find an enemy one instead. The conflict has been dubbed the "whiskey war."It all ended only in 2022. Canada and Denmark finally sat down at the negotiating table and decided: Let's just divide the rock in half. That's what they did — they drew the border right through the crack in the stone. In honor of the signing of the agreement, the foreign ministers of the two countries exchanged bottles — the Danes presented schnapps to the Canadians, and the Canadians presented whiskey to the Danes. The tradition was respected, the island was divided, and everyone stayed with their own people.
